It’s all very well having a dream wedding, but if the “do’s and don’t’s” aren’t taken into account, you could be setting yourself up for a nightmare.

Some people just want their wedding day to be perfect, but others want to create their own magic. Some prefer to get married on a beach for the day, while others get married in the snow or in the shadow of a castle. Some people want to keep the traditions while others want to go totally unique. The actual wedding is just the start of your big day and just one of the many things you will have to consider.

And I don’t blame you: The average cost of a wedding is $29,000. If you don’t want to start your marriage with a big pile of marital debt, you need to be careful with your marital expenses. That’s why many brides and grooms are turning to DIY projects to save money on their weddings. While DIY is a ritual for anyone getting married, it should be done with care. At least I spent a lot more money decorating my own wedding than if I had paid someone to do it. Before you begin, decide what is important to you. What are you willing to compromise on? A wedding should be as unique as your love, so don’t feel obligated to make the invitations with your own hands if that sounds awful. Do it yourself if it makes sense to you. 1. Alcohol

Yes, a full bar is a treat for your guests, but it costs an average of $4,000. You can always opt for a dry wedding, but if that makes your guests cranky, offer signature cocktails. Depending on how much your guests drink, you can expect to pay between $300 and $600 for signature cocktails. Buy some nice glass jugs and make 2 or 3 mixed drinks for your guests. Here’s a good list of cocktail recipes for large quantities. This is a wonderful way to add a personal touch to your wedding and give your guests the alcohol they need to dance the night away, but without the $4,000 price tag.

2. Photomaton

Renting a photo booth will cost you between $400 and $1,500. I didn’t have that much money for a wedding, so we did it ourselves. I used the Cricut machine to cut beautiful props out of paper and glued them to the Hobby Lobby sticks. If this is too time consuming, you can buy cheap backgrounds and accessories from Oriental Trading Company. For $150, you can get a quality photo booth for a much higher price.

3. Stationery

You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on invitations, table numbers or signs. This stuff is just do-it-yourself.

Invitations and programs: We have our invitations and programs printed at Costco, but there is nothing wrong with doing it yourself. Create a free design in Canva and print it at home on good card stock. If you don’t have a printer, you can always print everything at FedEx.
Guestbook: Don’t buy a $100 gold book. We bought a $20 pinata and asked guests to write their wishes on pieces of paper. For our first anniversary, we opened the pinata and read the guest book. It was much cheaper and more fun than a traditional guest book.
Table numbers: There are so many creative ways to design table numbers and seating. Or, if you’re like us, you can save even more money by not doing it and letting people sit where they want.

4. Music

The internet disagrees with me on this, but I think you can make wedding music on your own. We didn’t have the budget for a band or even a DJ, so it was either a playlist on my old iPod or silence. If live music isn’t important to you, there’s nothing wrong with making one playlist for the ceremony and another for the reception. One of my family members pressed the play button for both and it went off without a hitch. Oh, and did I mention it’s totally free?

5. Altar

You can buy a beautiful altar for over $1000, but I didn’t have that budget. Instead, I bought a background from Oriental Trading Company with our names and wedding date for $100. Luckily, our reception had a free archway, which I decorated with a $50 canopy, garlands from Dollar Tree, and fake flowers that I cut with my Cricut.

6. Central parts

You don’t have to buy fresh bouquets of flowers for every table: You can make a nice centerpiece without spending a lot of money. But be careful! It’s easy to spend $200 at Hobby Lobby on homemade decorations. To keep costs down, use free or found items as much as possible. For example, you can use items like wine bottles or old books to make an inexpensive DIY centerpiece. You can also do what we do: Our venue offered an all-inclusive package with floating candles included in the rental price.

7. Wedding memories

I’ve never been a fan of wedding gifts, but some people expect them anyway. Instead of paying $5 for a wedding coupon, you can make your own very inexpensively. I bought a big bag of Bombshell seeds on Etsy and wrapped them in Dollar Tree cloth bags. You can also offer homemade jams, coasters, table salt and much more. The list is long.

Don’t do these 5 things before you get married

I’m a big fan of DIY because it cuts down on wedding costs (and it’s fun!). But sometimes DIY can go too far. You don’t want to do something that is time consuming or expensive. Quality can also suffer if you don’t hire a professional. If you want to have a good wedding on a budget, don’t do these 5 things yourself.

1. Photography or videography

Too much was made of photography, and that is my biggest regret of my marriage. Yes, photography and videography are very expensive. But look at it this way: Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. You will remember this day for decades to come. Photos and videos are the only way to remember your wedding in all its details. Don’t ask your family members to take pictures and definitely don’t improvise as a photographer. Pay a professional to make sure everyone enjoys the day – you’ll get top quality photos that you’ll enjoy for years to come.

2. Planning

I was so nervous preparing for my wedding that I had a breakdown the day before the wedding. Believe me, it didn’t look so good in our pictures. A wedding planner or logistics coordinator on your wedding day is well worth the money you spend. You need a logistician, because even a small wedding requires a lot of details. On average, a coordinator will cost you $600 on the day of the party. In my experience, it costs money. If your budget doesn’t allow it, ask a close friend, outside of your wedding party, to take on the organization of your wedding.

3. Wedding motherhood

You can’t be your own wedding officiant, but it’s common for couples to ask a friend to do it. But is it really the best solution? Can you really trust your old college roommate to create a beautiful ceremony that will stay with you for the rest of your life? Instead, find a professional speaker for your wedding. We paid $200 for ours, which was a good deal. She helped organize the ceremony and even told us the best way to take pictures at the altar.

4. Hair and make-up

I’ve never been able to do my own hair and makeup, so I hired an in-house stylist for the big day. There’s nothing wrong with doing your own hair and makeup, but I wanted to look flawless in my wedding photos. I paid $600 for the bridal styling, but it was worth it. I felt beautiful and confident in our wedding photos, and those were expenses I was happy to outsource.

5. Foodstuffs

The caterer knows how to feed a crowd, provide plates and cutlery, and take care of cleaning up the food. There is just too much BS to handle alone, especially on your wedding day. By the way: Don’t make your own wedding cake. I’m a good baker, but I can never make a quality cake to feed a crowd. Professional bakers know how to make a cake to feed the right number of people. The average wedding cake costs $350, but you don’t have to spend that much. We bought our wedding cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes for half the price. You can also rent an impressive fake wedding cake and serve a Costco cake instead.
