When I was young, I liked having my own money. I sold lemonade, polished cars and even rummaged in my grandmother’s basement for treasures hidden under cobwebs, just to make money. Every time I thought I had enough money in my piggy bank, I begged my parents to go to Toys R Us to spend their money on the latest and greatest plastic children’s toys. In my early teens, the lemonade stand became a part-time job at the mall. And even though I had two part-time jobs in high school, they changed into new clothes and shoes faster than I could count. It wasn’t until I was 20 that I was able to balance my ability to work and save money. And when I think about how to teach my future children the value of a dollar, I realize that learning to work part time and do chores as a teenager will be far more valuable than the money they will earn. How children can effectively save and spend money
If I could go back to my day, I would stress the importance of saving money. I would probably also explain to the youngsters what a Roth IRA is. But I also want to say this. Enjoy. Children are children and they need to learn to balance saving money with spending money on experiences or things that benefit them. Sometimes going to the movies with friends is more important than putting an extra $20 in the bank. And if children learn to balance when they are young, they can pass that on as adults. Because God knows we need more adults who can find themselves in the middle of the frugality spectrum. So how do we teach children balance? When a child begins to earn money, parents can take the opportunity to introduce them to financial concepts, such as… B. :
- Establishment of an emergency fund. This is especially true for teenagers who have access to a car. Unexpected things happen. And while mom and dad are there to cover immediate medical expenses, if a teen is involved in an accident, he or she must have savings to repair the damage.
- Must file tax return. One of the hardest lessons in life is that the salary you earn is not really yours. While the employer pays state and federal taxes, the children must do their own taxes at the end of the year. And parents can help them remember. Since most teenagers earn a small amount, they can expect a refund, which will definitely help them manage their taxes well.
- Payment of accounts. Again, this is probably more applicable to teens who use the family car, but make them pay for gas, insurance, or some of the car payments (even if that money is yours!). Learning at a young age that a portion of one’s salary must be used to pay the bills is an important life lesson.
- Investing. Anyone can open a Roth IRA if they have income. This means you can help your child open an account that not only allows them to invest, but to do so with tax benefits.
- Smart Output. Children should be able to choose what to spend part of their income on. But also remind kids how nice it is to save money to buy bigger things, or what the opportunity cost is if you don’t take advantage of it, and how that affects their buying decisions. When teens and kids can spend money that adds value to their lives, they will realize the true power behind money.
